Snake dermis fibres, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The dermis is the layer of living skin below the outer epidermis and the scales of a snake. In the dermis, thick bands of dermal collagen provide a snake with mechanical support, along with muscles for movement and swallowing prey. Magnification: x500 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
