Caption

Animation of damaged regions rapidly filling the lungs of a patient with advanced COVID-19 disease. COVID-19 is a new disease caused by the new virus SARS-CoV-2. It was first detected in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, and rapidly spread around the world. While many cases are mild, some patients, especially those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, develop more severe symptoms. These can include pneumonia with regions of lung damage (yellow), that can be rapidly fatal.
