Animation of the spread of viruses by sneezing or coughing. The person on the left is infected with a respiratory disease, such as COVID-19. When they cough or sneeze, they eject a aerosol cloud of water droplets containing the virus. These can spread several metres in air. If they are inhaled by another person, the virus can enter their lungs and start a new infection. Staying a few metres away from other people can help to prevent spread of viral diseases like this. This virus particles can also come to rest on surfaces, where they can survive for several days. Washing hands regularly can help to kill viruses picked up in this way.
