Cortisone stress hormone, polarised light micrograph. Cortisone is a steroid hormone produced by the kidneys. It suppresses the immune system and so reduces inflammation and pain at the site of an injury. Synthetic cortisone is used to treat some joint and tendon pain and to suppress the immune system in patients with autoimmune diseases or after organ transplant.
