Caption

Colorless or white light as perceived by human eye actually consists of many colors or wavelengths of light. In this photo a beam of white light is incident from lower left corner onto a reflection diffraction grating. A diffraction grating is an optical element whose properties (ex. Diffracted light propagates along discrete directions, called diffraction orders. Some light is reflected like from a normal mirror (zeroth order) and does not exhibit dispersion (white beam). Some light is diffracted into the first diffraction order and is dispersed (decomposed) into different colors.
