False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Cardiobacterium hominis, a Gram-negative bacillus (rod-like bacterium) that causes endocarditis in humans. C. hominis is the only member of the genus & endocarditis, inflammation of the interior of the heart, is the only human disease it causes. The bacterium enters the bloodstream via the mouth as a consequence of dental disease or procedures. Its virulence is associated with preexisting heart disease, as it adheres to damaged heart tissue & multiplies. Antibiotics provide effective treatment.
