Neisseria gonorrhoeae. False-colour light micro- graph of the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus), cause of the sexually-transmitted disease gonorrhoea. This Gram-negative bacteria is non-motile, kidney-shaped (as seen here, blue) and is typically found in pairs. Gonorrhoea is one of the most common venereal diseases. Infection is by sexual contact. Symptoms include pain on passing urine, and a discharge of pus from the penis or vagina (although some women experience no initial symptoms). Treatment is with antibiotic drugs. If untreated, the infection spreads and may cause sterility. It may be transmitted to a baby during childbirth. Magnification: x2,000 at 6x7cm size.
