Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans. M. tuberculosis is a rod-shaped bacillus bacteria. Here, the cell wall has split (upper right), as occurs when antibiotic drugs kill the bacterium. M. tuberculosis is spread by coughing or sneezing, and is inhaled into the lungs. It forms a primary tubercle during initial infection, which develops into pulmonary TB. TB is still a fatal disease in developing countries and among AIDS patients. Magnification: x44,000 at 6x4.5 cm size.
