Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the archaea Methanospirillum hungatii. An elongated Gram-negative cell, it is here undergoing cell division. Typically, these thin cells are spiral shaped. Two other cells are cut through in cross-section. Methanospirillum hungatii is an anaerobe living in oxygen-free conditions. It is a methanogen in that it metabolizes carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce methane. Magnification: x29,000 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x100,000 at 8x10 inch size.
