Neisseria gonorrhoea. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of N. gonorrhoea bacteria - the species that causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea ("the clap"). N. gonorrhoea are gram-negative rounded cells (cocci) that are often found stuck together in pairs, like here. They infect the genital mucous membranes of both sexes, causing pain on urination and a discharge of pus from the vagina or penis. Some cases of gonorrhoea pass unnoticed without symptoms. In other cases complications develop, leading potentially to sterility. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification x5000 at 35mm size.
