Chlamydia. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Chlamydia sp. bacteria. This genus of minute spherical, gram-negative bacteria includes several species that parasitize humans. The bact- eria are obligate parasites, incapable of living outside the cells of their host. Diseases caused by Chlamydia include the sexually-transmitted disease lymphogranuloma venereum; the eye diseases trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis; many cases of non-specific urethritis (NSU); a type of pneumonia called psittacosis; bronchitis; and sinusitis. Chamydia are among the tiniest of bac- teria, being about the size of large viruses. Magnification unknown.
