Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is the cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans. The bacteria are spread by coughing or sneezing, and are inhaled into the lungs. A primary tubercle (lesion) forms during initial infection, which develops into pulmonary TB. TB is still a fatal disease in developing countries and among AIDS patients. Magnification: 30,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
