Drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria. Transmission electron micrograph of a strain of the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is multiresistant to antibiotics and antibacterial drugs. Cells of this strain typically grow in aggregates, which protect them against phagocytosis by white blood cells. M. tuberculosis causes tuberculosis (TB) in humans. The bacteria are spread by coughing or sneezing and are inhaled into the lungs, where they proliferate to form lesions called tubercles. TB is still a fatal disease in developing countries and among AIDS patients. Magnification x90,000 at 6x7cm size.
