Particle tracks and astronomy. Computer illustrat- ion of subatomic particle tracks (white) and an armillary sphere with galaxies in the background. The tracks result from charged particles moving through a bubble chamber of superheated liquid. Ionisation of the liquid by the particles causes it to boil, so that tracks of tiny bubbles are left in their wake. Each particle makes a distinct track, such as spirals of electrons and positrons. Galaxies are independent groups of stars held together by gravitational attraction. An armillary sphere represents the celestial sphere of stars and planets. Particle physics has shown the basic structure of the atoms that form the universe.
