Caption

Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Coloured Scanning electron micrograph of a colony of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the cause of tuberculosis (TB) in humans. These bacteria are spread by coughing or sneezing. When inhaled into the lungs they proliferate in an infected lesion called a primary tubercle. They then spread to local lymph nodes, causing pulmonary tuberculosis (consumption). TB is still a major killer in developing countries and among AIDS patients. Magnification: x4,200 at 6x7cm size.
