Eubacterium yurii. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of long rod-shaped bacteria isolated from a diseased tooth. These bacteria, Eubacterium yurii are seen among red blood cells. They are associated with gum disease (gingivitis) in humans. These bacteria are anaerobic, rod- shaped and Gram-positive. They tend to form unusual three-dimensional aggregates resembling "test-tube-brushes". Eubacterium yurii adhere to oral epithelium, and occur in dental plaque that forms on teeth. Plaque is a cause of tooth decay and may cause gingivitis. Treatment may include antibacterial drugs. Magnification: x1,400 at 5x7cm size. Magnification;x5,500 at 8x10' size.
