Pseudomonas bacteria. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Pseudomonas sp. bacteria in lung tissue. This common genus consists of gram- negative, rod-shaped bacilli. Members of this genus flourish in diverse habitats such as soil, decaying vegetable matter, vegetation and water. It is not normally carried within humans unless the host's immune response has been suppressed by another illness or drugs. A lung infection of Pseudomonas sp. bacteria can lead to a range of conditions, from mild bronchitis to severe pneumonia. Pseudomonas sp. bacteria can also infect the skin and urinary tract. Magnification: x6000 at 6x9cm size.
