Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Coloured Light Micrograph (LM) of clusters of the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. They are Gram- positive rod-shaped bacilli bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB) in humans. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is spread by coughing or sneezing, and is inhaled into the lungs. After forming a primary tubercle (nodular lesion) the immune system usually holds the infection at this stage. However if the disease spreads through the lymphatic system it can be fatal. While deaths in the developed world from TB are rare, they are still common in developing countries. Magnification unknown.
