Vibrio cholerae. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single Vibrio cholerae bacterium, the cause of human cholera. It is a gram-negative bacillus (rod-shaped) bacterium with a single hair-like flagellum for movement. The bacteria's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, yellow) is contained in the cytoplasm (blue). V. cholerae is a water-borne pathogen, transmitted through drinking water contaminated by faeces. Cholera infects the intestine causing vomiting and diarrhoea, and the patient may die from severe dehydration. Outbreaks of cholera are associated with poor sanitary conditions and may occur in epidemic proportions. Magnification unknown.
