Neisseria gonorrhoea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria, the cause of the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea ("the clap"). N. gonorrhoea are gram-negative cocci (spherical) bacteria that are often found stuck together in pairs, as here. They infect the genital mucous membranes of both sexes, causing pain on urination and a discharge of pus from the vagina or penis. Some cases of gonorrhoea pass unnoticed, while in others complications may develop leading to sterility. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification unknown.
