Caption

Mycobacterium complex. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Mycobacterium avium and M. intracellulare bacteria, causes of tuberculosis-type infection. A mesosome (red), an artificial structure (artefact) caused by TEM fixation lies within the bacterium at right. These gram-positive bacillus (rod-shaped) bacteria are rarely pathogenic. However they infect people with reduced immune functioning, especially those with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The bacteria spread throughout the body in infected people and are hard to treat as they are drug resistant. Magnification: x97, 700 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x335,000 at 8x10 inch size.
