Caption

Bacteria and other microbes. Illustration of bacteria, bacteriophage viruses, an alga, a protozoan and a fungus in a cell environment. The bacillus (rod-shaped) bacterium at top centre may be Salmonella sp. , a cause of food poisoning. The other cocci (round) bacteria, at top left, could be Streptococcus sp. , responsible for diseases such as tonsillitis and pneumonia. At lower right is a bacteriophage, a virus which injects its genetic material into a bacterium forcing it to produce more viruses. At lower left is a protozoan (orange) moving over a filament of Spirogyra sp. algae (green). A fungus is at upper left. Size of organisms not in proportion.
