Caption

Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Vibrio cholerae bacteria, the cause of human cholera. They are Gram-negative bacilli (rod- shaped) bacteria which possess a single hair-like flagellum (not seen) for movement. V. cholerae are water-borne pathogens, transmitted through drinking water contaminated by faeces. Cholera infects the intestine, causing vomiting and diarrhoea, and the patient may die from severe dehydration. Outbreaks of cholera are associated with poor sanitary conditions and may occur in epidemic proportions. Magnification: x11,000 at 6x7cm size.
