Potassium ferricyanide and salicin, light micrograph. Derived from the bark of the willow tree, salicin (formerly salicine) is used as an anti-inflammatory drug. It is used in small quantities as a food preservative and as an antiseptic in toothpaste. Copper sulphate is used in fertilizers as a fungicide, algaecide, root killer, and herbicide. It is also used as an antimicrobial and molluscicide agent. This is a crystalline film consisting of a mixture of the salicin and copper sulphate. Magnification: x70 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
