Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis bacteria. These aerobic gram-negative cocci (spherical bacteria) are commonly found in the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract of mammals, including humans. There they cause opportunistic respiratory tract infections, especially in people with weakened immune systems. These include sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus membranes, which may lead to otitis media, an infection of the middle ear. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification unknown.
