Tongue bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of unidentified bacteria on the surface of a human tongue. Seen here are rod- shaped bacteria (bacilli, orange, green and brown) and cocci bacteria (spherical, blue). The mouth and tongue supports a large resident population of bacteria, with most types being harmless and some even useful. Some, however, may cause throat infections or form plaque which leads to tooth decay. Magnification: x6700 at 6x8.5cm size.
