Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. These virus-like bacteria live inside human cells and cause infections of the eyes and lymph nodes. They also cause the sexually transmitted diseases lymphogranuloma venereum (inflammation and ulceration of the lymph nodes in the groin) and non-specific urethritis (which causes a discharge from the penis of men). In women, untreated non-specific urethritis can lead to infertility. Infections can be treated with antibiotic drugs. Magnification: x32,800 at 6x8.5cm size.
