Bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria (yellow) growing in a toilet. The sample includes enterobacteria, bacteria that normally reside harmlessly in the gut, but which cause disease under certain conditions. Bacteria thrive in the toilet in the presence of organic components contained in urine. The crystals (blue) are calcium salts deposited as water in the toilet evaporates.
