Salmonella bacteria (red), computer artwork. The flagella (yellow) that they move with are seen. These bacteria occur mainly in the intestines of humans and animals. Some strains are pathogenic and cause food poisoning (salmonellosis), resulting in abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Common sources of human infection are dairy, poultry and meat products. Treatment consists of rehydration and the use of antibiotic drugs.
