Gas gangrene bacteria. Light micrograph of gas gangrene bacteria (Clostridium perfringens). This is the main bacterium identified in the acute, rapidly-spreading gangrene known as gas gangrene. It results in foul-smelling dead tissue, and is treated with antibiotics, though amputation may be required to prevent its spread. Gram stain.
