Light micrograph of a section through human skin showing nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). This rare complex genetic disorder is characterised by a wide variety of developmental abnormalities and a predisposition to developing certain forms of cancer. It can be described as a particular type of skin cancer known as basal cell carcinoma. Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is caused by changes in one of three genes known as PTCH1, PTCH2 or SUFU.
