Light micrograph of a section through human stomach tissue showing gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST). This is a disease in which abnormal cells form in the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract. These GISTs are soft tissue sarcomas that can be located in any part of the digestive system. The most common sites are the stomach and small intestine where they start in the specialised nerve cell located in the walls of the digestive system.
