Light micrograph of a section through human cancerous tissue showing anal cancer. This is a rare type of cancer that affects the anus, which can start in any part of the anus. There are a range of symptoms including bleeding, itching and a discharge of mucus. Other symptoms are often similar to haemorrhoids and anal fissures. Most anal cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).
