Anthrax spores, light micrograph. These are the spores of the Bacillus anthracis bacterium. It is found in the soil and on livestock. Inhalation of the spores causes the most deadly form of anthrax, the lung infection. Treatment with an antibiotic drug like Cipro (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) is required before symptoms appear. The intestinal and skin forms of anthrax are more easily treated. Anthrax bacteria are easily cultured, and could be used in biological warfare or terrorism.
