Animation of the outline of the Cocos Plate, a small tectonic plate in the Pacific Ocean west of Central America. It is a young tectonic plate, around 23 million years old. The line here includes the Riviera Plate at the northernmost tip, a microplate which separated from Cocos as little as five million years ago. The Cocos Plate is moving northeastwards, subducting under the North American and Caribbean Plates. This forms the chain of volcanoes along the Pacific coast of Central America.
