Animation of the Earth zooming out from the Canary islands and crossing Africa, then zooming in to Mauritius. Both island groups were formed by the eruptions of volcanoes over hotspots. The Canary Islands hotspot still lies beneath the active volcanoes on the islands. The hotspot that formed Mauritius is now under Reunion Island, which is 175 kilometres to the northeast.
