Caption

Animation of the Earth showing the sea surface temperatures during an El Nino event. El Nino is the warm phase of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During an El Nino event, the surface waters of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean are signifincanly warmer than usual (red). The presence of warm water off the western coast of Central and South America dramtically increases rainfall in the region, and has effects on the weather across the globe.
