Caption

Animation of fault lines in Japan. The Fossa Magna is a lowland rift zone, between the two blue faults, the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line to the west and the Tanakura Tectonic Line to the east. The red line is the Median Tectonic Line, the longest fault line in Japan. Japan lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active zone encircling the Pacific Ocean that features numerous volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
