Fairy shrimp (Chirocephalus diaphanus) in water. The shrimp that swims up mid-clip is carrying a clutch of eggs. This fairy shrimp is found in ephemeral pools in western Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula to southern Great Britain. It is a filter-feeding freshwater crustacean that can reach a length of up to 13 millimetres. Its eggs can survive extensive periods of desiccation, hatching when they are submerged again. This means they can live and breed in pools which cannot support fish and other potential predators. Filmed at 120 frames per second in Wales, UK.
