Caption

Gas gangrene bacteria (Clostridium perfringens) coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These rod-shaped bacteria are pathogenic. They can cause food poisoning, but some strains also cause gas gangrene, the rapid spread of necrotic tissue. The affected tissue may have to be amputated to stop the gangrene spreading to healthy tissue. Other strains of C. perfringens cause similar decaying disorders in animals. Magnification: x9500 when printed 10cm high.
