Caption

Animation of a giant impact on Mars early in the history of the Solar System. The impact of a protoplanet has been suggested as the cause of the formation of the North Polar Basin on Mars, a huge depression covering much of the northern hemisphere of the planet. Ejecta from the impact may have also formed Mars' two moons.
