Animation of a view of ancient Mars from space, showing the loss of its surface water and atmosphere. Mars is thought to have had a thick atmosphere with liquid water on the surface between around 4.1 and 3.7 billion years ago, in a time called the Noachian period. The following period, the Hesperian, saw Mars lose much of its water. Its internal magnetic field stopped around four billion years ago, which allowed the solar wind to gradually strip its atmosphere. Today Mars is a dry dusty desert, although it still contains substantial amounts of water as ice.
