Moraxella catarrhalis bacteria, light micrograph. These are Gram-negative diplococci (paired spheres) bacteria that are often found in the nasopharynx of healthy individuals. However, in very young children, or those with a weakened immune system they can cause a number of infections including, sinusitis, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.
