Bacteria on skin. Conceptual image taken in ultraviolet light of a woman's hands covered in bacteria. Many types of bacteria are found on human skin. Many are normal microflora that may be associated with hair follicles and sweat glands, and are harmless. Others are pathogenic and have been picked up from contaminated surfaces, raw meat or faeces. If these bacteria enter the body, via the mouth or cuts in the skin, they can cause disease. Washing the hands after touching raw meat or going to the toilet helps to prevent the spread of infections.
