Caption

Close-up of the eyes (dark) around the shell edge of a king scallop (Pecten maximus). The king scallop has around 30 simple eyes lining its shell margin. It is a bottom-dwelling filter feeder, but it can swim away by clapping its shell if it detects a predator. It inhabits shallow seas in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Canary Islands to Norway. It is farmed for its flesh, but the majority of the catch is taken by dredging, which damages the ecosystem of the seabed. This specimen is in Wales, UK.
