Caption

White matter fibres. Animation based on a diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scan of the brain, showing the bundles of white matter nerve fibres. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. DTI scans show the diffusion of water along white matter fibres, allowing their orientations and the connections between brain regions to be mapped. Here, the colour and width of the pathways correspond to local degree of uncertainty along the trajectories. Yellow colours and larger tract widths represent a higher uncertainty than red colours and smaller tract widths. This shows that there is lower reliability when the pathways are projecting into the cortical regions.
