Human brain, coloured diffusion MRI scan. The red structure is the uncinate fasciculus, which connects part of the brain's limbic system to the frontal lobe. The colour on this scan reflects the orientation of bundles of white matter nerve fibres as determined with diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord.
