Caption

Ultrasound scan showing intussusception of the intestine of a one-year-old boy. He had presented with abdominal pain. Intussusception is when part of the intestine slides into the next part in the manner of a collapsible telescope. It presents on ultrasound as a round, multi-layered bowel-within-bowel called a doughnut sign, or target sign. The outer portion of intestine is called the intussuscipiens, while the inner fold is called the intussusceptum. It is more common in infants and requires urgent treatment. Usually an enema can reverse the folding, but surgery may be required.
