Mycobacterium chelonae bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria are found in soil and water, and as normal flora in the guts and respiratory tracts of humans and animals. They rarely cause gut or lung infections, but can cause local infections and abscesses in skin and soft tissues, especially after surgery or intramuscular injections. They may also cause wide-spread infection in those with weakened immune systems. Treatment is with antibiotics.
