Caption

Molecular model of carbon dioxide (CO2), formed of two oxygen atoms (red), each double bonded to a carbon atom (black). Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Its concentration in the atmosphere has increased by nearly 50% since the pre-industrial era, from 280 to over 412 parts per million. This has been largely due to the burning of fossil fuels.
